Booster or Revaccination

Hepatitis A Vaccine

A single injection followed by a booster dose helps provide long-term protection. The first booster should be given 6–12 months after the primary vaccination.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Standard schedule: 0, 1 and 6 months. Accelerated schedule: 0, 1, 2, 12 months. A more rapid schedule is available only for use in exceptional circumstances.

Typhoid Vaccine (Injectable)

A single injection helps protect patients for 3 years.

Quadrivalent Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine

Children over three months to two years: The primary course consists of two doses with an interval of three months between each dose.
Children over two years of age and adults: The primary course consists of a single dose.

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio Vaccine

A total of 5 injections helps protect patients for a lifetime. However, a booster dose may be required for persons travelling abroad.

Yellow Fever Vaccine

The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is valid for ten years beginning from the tenth day after primary immunisation and immediately after re-immunisation if re-immunisation occurs within the ten-year period.

Rabies Vaccine

For primary pre-exposure immunisation, three doses of 1.0ml of rabies vaccine should be given on days 0, 7 and 28. The third dose can be given from day 21 if there is insufficient time before travel. For those at regular and continuous risk, a single reinforcing dose of vaccine should be given one year after the primary course has been completed.

For most patients, a single dose is sufficient.

Disease

Description

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. Travellers are at greatest risk when they visit rural areas with low levels of sanitation in resource-poor countries.

Typhoid Fever

Typhoid is passed through contaminated food and water and is a high risk in countries where sanitation and hygiene standards are poor.

Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever is spread by mosquitoes and is found in tropical parts of Asia, Africa, Middle East, Far east, South America . Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination in the form of an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis before they allow a traveller to enter. Failure to provide a valid certificate can lead to a traveller being quarantined, immunised or denied entry.

Meningococcal Meningitis

Meningococcal disease is spread through direct contact with an infected person or through their coughs and sneezes. Meningococcal disease occurs all over the world although the highest burden of the disease occurs in the "meningitis belt" of sub-Saharan Africa.

Rabies

Rabies is a fatal disease and is contracted from the bite or scratch of a rabid animal. Most deaths from rabies occur in Asia, Africa and Latin America following a bite from an infected dog.

Japanese Encephalitis

Japanese Encephalitis is caused by a virus which is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The disease occurs in parts of Asia. Risk to short-term travellers to Asia is low but risk increases for those who plan to live or travel for long periods of time in infected areas, especially if they visit rural areas during transmission season.
